Pattern recognition in clinical real-world applications
Technical innovations in science and engineering facilitate rapidly growing amounts of complex data. It is the life sciences, specifically biomedical imaging, where novel methods have opened up new vistas for the exploration of the human body, revealing both structural and functional information. However, these techniques have led to vast amounts of multidimensional data whose precise and reliable visual analysis by bio-scientists and radiologists requires a considerable amount of human intervention and expertise, thus resulting in a cost factor of substantial economic relevance. Hence, the computer-assisted visualization and analysis of complex imaging data has moved into the focus of interest as an issue of high priority research efforts.
