Fracture Healing

The work in this investigative area spans basic science and human clinical trials. Understanding the fundamental principles of how a fractured bone heals has led to the development of therapeutic agents that may be able accelerate the process or even stimulate healing in a bone that would not normally do so. Engineering principles used in these projects include mechanical testing, cell/tissue engineering and imaging.

single CT

Single CT level demonstrating a pelvic fracture callus

3D pelvis

3D reconstruction of the pelvis demonstrating the volume of callus. Enlargement: 3D rendering of the callus volume after subtraction of the pelvic structures. Calculated volume = 44.258.6 mm^3
